Task 2 is devoted to the development of materials systems intended for use with advanced ballistic reentry vehicles. Materials to be considered will be nonmetallic, reinforced composites of both the homogeneous and graded types, with such materials applied to both nose-tip and heat shield requirements. The program will examine in detail resins, reinforcements, and various techniques for fabricating such materials in composite form. These materials will be characterized in sufficient detail such that systems planners will be provided with adequate information to support the preliminary design of future ballistic reentry systems with regard to material considerations. Task 2 will place primary emphasis upon improving the ablation performance of newly developed composite materials. However, improvement of ablation performance will not be achieved at the expense and/or the neglect of related and desirable characteristics such as weight, strength, fabricability, cost, and observables.
